How to Get Rid of Smoke Smell in House

By: ROS Team

If you’ve ever walked out of a room filled with heavy smoke, you know how suffocating the smell can be. It stays for hours on your clothes, hair, and pretty much everything else.

If you’re attempting to get rid of smoke odor in your house after a barbeque or fire (or even if it’s from smoking), here are some quick and easy cleaning tips.

Identify The Source Of The Smoke Smell

The first step in removing a smoke smell is to identify the source of the odor. Smoke can come from many sources, so it’s important to rule out each one before you begin cleaning.

  • Check for Fire: If you have any doubt about whether or not your home has been on fire recently. Check for signs of damage like charring and melted plastic.
  • Check for Dead Animals: If there’s an animal carcass somewhere in your house (or even just outside) that could be contributing to a foul stench as well as attracting pests such as mice and rats – a terrible combination!

Open The Windows

To help eliminate the smell of smoke in your home, it’s important to open windows. Open the windows on both sides of your house and let in fresh air by opening them as wide as possible. The best time to do this is at night or when it’s cooler outside; this will prevent any extra heat from entering your home.

If there are trees near any of those windows – especially if they’re large trees with lots of leaves. It may be a good idea to move them away from those particular windows. So that they won’t block fresh air from coming into the house through them!

Use A Fan

If you’re lucky enough to have smoke damage in a room that has an open window, use a fan to blow the smoke out of your house.

To get rid of the smoke smell, place the fan in front of the open window and turn it on for at least 24 hours. The fan will speed up drying time and help remove lingering odors from surfaces like walls or furniture.

Clean Your House Thoroughly

Another step to de-smoke your home is to clean it, and the best way to do that is with a vacuum cleaner.

Start by vacuuming all furniture, walls, floors, and ceilings (including cabinets) in the room where you smoked. Then move on to other rooms in the house that were exposed to smoke from this room. This includes closets with doors that may have been open while you were smoking in another room as well as hallways and stairwells. If there was any smell lingering around them too (you don’t want any nasty surprises when guests come over).

Use An Air Purifier

If your house is still in the process of being cleaned up, or if you’ve just moved into a new home and need to get rid of the smoke smell, consider using an air purifier.

These machines are great for removing smells from rooms. They can also help with allergies and asthma symptoms. Which are often caused by dust mites and mold spores in the air (both common after fires).

Air purifiers work by trapping particles on HEPA filters that have been rated for smoke removal – make sure yours does before purchasing!

They’re especially useful if there has been any damage done to walls or floorboards in the room you want to be cleaned. Since these surfaces may contain toxic chemicals left behind by fire-fighting efforts. It’s important that they be covered by something like carpeting before putting them back into service again later down the line.

Baking Soda And Vinegar Combo

Baking soda and vinegar are a powerful combination when it comes to removing smoke smells from your home. The combination is often used as an odor-neutralizer in restaurants and hotels. To make this mixture:

  • Combine 1 cup of baking soda with 1 cup of white vinegar in a bowl or container large enough for you to fit your vacuum cleaner hose into easily
  • Let this mixture sit for 10 minutes, then use your vacuum cleaner to remove it from carpeting or upholstery

Febreze Spray And Fans

Use a spray on the affected areas. If your home has been exposed to smoke, you can use Febreze to help remove the smell. Spray it on couches and other furniture that have been affected by the smoke, then turn on fans to circulate air around the room.

This will help you get rid of any lingering odors faster than simply leaving them alone would allow you to do so!

If necessary, use a dehumidifier or air purifier as well (or both). These devices will suck out all sorts of nasty stuff from your house. Including harmful chemicals and carcinogens and turning them into harmless elements so they won’t hurt anyone anymore!

Smoke can be Overwhelming

Smoke smell is not good for your health, and it can cause headaches, nausea, and asthma attacks. It can also trigger other health problems, such as heart disease and lung cancer.

The smell of smoke will make you feel depressed too!
